In life and business, I keep returning to a simple idea—people want surprise and delight in their lives. Like this: 

This animal surprised us on a recent trip through Georgia!
A surprising moment can amplify an experience, enhance our memory and stimulate our thinking. I’ve written about the power of emotion to improve memory before. Here are some articles that illustrate the power of surprise and delight in business.

The very crucial element to great magic is surprise. Magicians consciously start with that in mind. But in our personal lives, it’s easy to enjoy the comfort of routine. So if we want to delight our spouses or surprise our children, we have to put concentrated thought into it.
Not only is the result great, but so is the process. (To delight someone, you have to first go through the process of paying attention to them, acknowledging them, which means the journey may be more important than the destination.)
Restaurants, hotels and theme-parks all fulfill the same human need for surprise and delight. It’s the same reason why I’ve been invited to create magical wedding proposals many, many times, including for myself! 
Three years ago I crafted a very special surprise in the middle of a magic show.
